A health maintenance organization, or HMO, is a type of managed care organization or managed health care organizations. Many companies sign up with health maintenance organizations, or HMOs, in order to provide health care coverage to their employees. Some health maintenance organizations specialize in working with larger employers while others mostly work with smaller employers. Under HMOs, people choose their primary care physician from a list of providers that are part of the HMO. People who need to see a specialist will need to see a specialist in the HMO if the patient expects to be covered for the treatment they get. Some health maintenance organizations are staff model HMOs that have centralized buildings where participating physicians work. Other health maintenance organizations are group model HMOs, which pay participating physicians as a group. Many health maintenance organizations are network model HMOs that contract with many individual physicians and providers.

Ask the HMO how long they have been in business. Those that have several years of experience are usually larger because they have had enough time to build their social and business connections. Ask the HMO to explain their different insurance plans so that you and your kids can get the personal medical coverage that you need to keep your medical bills low while still getting the services you need from trained physicians. While you need to think about the monthly payments for your health insurance plans, you should also ask them how many doctors’ visits and prescription medicines you get. You might also be expected to make a co-pay, so ask them how much they will cost you when you go to the doctor or get a prescription filled. Some plans have low rates, but then charge high co-pays or only pay for certain types of medical care so be sure that you weight your options and pick the one that’s best for you.
